Spotify and Universal Music Agree on Deal for Fan-Made AI Covers and Remixes

2 Min Read

Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) have teamed up to offer fans the ability to create AI-generated covers and remixes of their favorite songs. This new feature will be available as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, with a revenue share arrangement in place for artists involved. While specific pricing and launch dates have not been disclosed, Spotify had previously mentioned its collaboration with major music groups like UMG, Sony, Warner, Merlin, and Believe to develop AI tools that prioritize artists’ interests.

Spotify emphasizes that these AI tools are developed through pre-agreed arrangements to ensure artists’ participation and fair compensation, a contrast to competitors like Suno, which faced legal issues. Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström highlighted the importance of consent, credit, and compensation for artists. UMG CEO Sir Lucian Grainge noted the potential for artists to engage fans further while generating new revenue streams.

Past ventures in AI music, including those by Suno and Udio, experienced legal challenges, with Suno settling a lawsuit with Warner Music Group and Udio with UMG. Despite this, Suno continues to face claims from UMG and Sony. Spotify, seeing consumer interest, proactively secured a deal with UMG, and more label partnerships could follow.

This announcement was part of Spotify’s Investor Day, where they also revealed an AI-powered audiobook tool, AI features for podcasters, a desktop app for personal podcast creation, and concert ticket reservations for top fans.
