Sony has unveiled a luxurious addition to its flagship headphone lineup, the 1000X The Collexion, celebrating 10 years of its iconic series. The 1000X series was first introduced with the MDR-1000X, noted for its superior noise canceling and design. While not a replacement for the WH-1000XM6 released a year ago, the new model is positioned as a luxury offering focused on comfort, marked by a significant price of $650.

The design retains elements from the original, including metal and vegan leather materials for enhanced comfort. However, the use of these materials makes the headphones heavier and affects the noise-canceling performance, which isn’t as strong as the XM6 due to the thinner ear cups. Both models use the QN3 processor and a 12-mic system, but passive isolation is weaker in the 1000X. The battery life is slightly reduced, offering 24 hours compared to the XM6’s 30, with less efficient fast charging.

Sound quality sees a minor improvement with new 30mm carbon fiber drivers, delivering a clearer lower midrange and high-end sparkle. The model introduces new listening modes but maintains a similar sound quality to its predecessor.

The 1000X features a distinctive case with a handle, differentiating it from other models. While the headphones offer style and comfort, their high price and less effective noise canceling may limit their appeal. Ultimately, for those seeking a balance of functionality and comfort, the WH-1000XM6 remains a strong choice.
