Pentagon Signs Agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft, and AWS for AI Deployment on Classified Networks

After securing agreements with Google, SpaceX, and OpenAI, the U.S. Defense Department announced on Friday that it has also signed deals with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection AI. These agreements will allow the Pentagon to deploy their AI technology and models on classified networks for “lawful operational use.”

“These agreements facilitate the U.S. military’s transformation into an AI-first force and enhance decision superiority in warfare,” the statement said.

These deals come after the Pentagon’s contentious dispute with Anthropic over AI model usage terms, where Anthropic demanded guardrails to prevent its AI from being used for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. They are currently in court, but Anthropic won an injunction in March against being labeled a “supply-chain risk” by the Pentagon.

“The Department aims to build an architecture that avoids AI vendor lock-in and ensures long-term flexibility,” the statement added. “Diverse AI capabilities will enable warfighters to act confidently and protect the nation.”

The DOD stated that the companies’ AI hardware and models will operate in Impact Level 6 (IL6) and Impact Level 7 (IL7) environments to enhance data synthesis, situational understanding, and decision-making. IL6 and IL7 involve high-security classifications for systems critical to national security, requiring stringent protections.

Over 1.3 million DOD personnel have utilized the secure platform GenAI.mil for generative AI, providing access to language models and tools in approved cloud environments, assisting primarily with non-classified tasks.
