At the 2026 Google I/O keynote, Google unveiled enhanced agentic features in Search, allowing users to create, customize, and manage multiple AI agents for staying informed on their interests. This move is part of Google’s broader strategy towards agentic AI systems that can initiate and assist with tasks instead of just answering one query at a time.
Unlike traditional search tools that respond when asked, Google’s information agents work continuously in the background, helping users stay informed about their interests without repetitive searches.
Rather than providing a list of links, the agents can synthesize data from various sources, explain relevance, compare views, and offer actionable insights. These agents are an evolution of Google Alerts, launched in 2003, but are intended to go beyond mere notifications.
For example, a stock market enthusiast could create an agent focused on specific companies, share prices, or economic trends. The agent could monitor market activity, track breaking news, summarize reports, alert users to major changes, and provide detailed summaries and links.
The agents can also assist with everyday tasks like tracking flight prices, monitoring sports teams, following news, keeping up with housing or job market trends, and tracking weather or traffic.
To use the feature, users open AI Mode in Search and enter a prompt. For instance: “keep me updated on nearby movie tickets for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’.” Relevant notifications are sent via the Google app, and tracked topics can be managed or refined in AI Mode history.
Information agents launch this summer, initially for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with plans for a wider release later.
In addition to these agents, Google introduced a major redesign of Search, featuring a reimagined “intelligent search box,” marking the biggest change to Search in over 25 years. The new interface is designed to handle longer, conversational queries, with a new AI-powered query suggestion system that goes beyond traditional autocomplete.
